Question: keyless entry

doesn't open driver side door.

Same here. It is either the actuator ( I replaced mine with no difference) or it is one of the relays in the Gm5 module.
The module can be replaced by a BMW dealer and subsequently programmed for about 7 to 800 dollars or there is a gentleman in California that can repair it for about 100 to 125 dollars. He can also restore your key cheaply and he is very good at his service.

Will restoring the key solve the problem? if not what are alternatives- my daughter just bought a 2005 BMW with new engine and new transmission but she is a single mom with 2 children so any suggestion you might have would be useful we live in Georgia. Thanks
